The best thing for college football? Deion Sanders. But some think he’s the worst thing as well. Here’s your dose of Daily Deion.
Disclaimer: I have always been a fan of Deion Sanders. Loved him as a player at FSU, in Atlanta and Dallas and even respected him as a 49er against my Cowboys.
The downsides to being Deion? One of them is this — he’s so famous and polarizing that other teams are going to make every game against the Buffs like their Super Bowl. Okay, that’s a bit over the top (right Spencer Rattler?) but you get the idea. No one, and I mean no one, overlooks Colorado since Deion took over and that’s a bit of a problem for his team. It hasn’t really mattered much yet as TCU knew they’d be in the national spotlight, but couldn’t hang, and Nebraska is just terrible. We saw it against Colorado State as they played much better and tougher than anyone expected. Oregon and USC otherwise would take the Buffs lightly this season as they destroyed CU last year 49-10 and 55-17 respectively last year. This year it’s a completely different story as the Ducks had to get super hyped for the Buffs to match the media attention and USC found themselves in a national focus even more than they had been against teams like Notre Dame and UCLA in previous years.

So now teams like Arizona State and Stanford, who both suck, have to look at the Colorado game as their best chance for a spotlight, and you know they will give even more effort than against a “normal” coach. This is the way it will be forever as long as Deion is the head coach at Colorado. Some may say this is great as his team always needs to be prepared, but ask teams like Alabama, UGA, and in the NFL teams like the Kansas City Chiefs. An off-game can easily turn into a loss against a team with little to lose and a lot to gain.
Spencer Rattler recently said the Vols treated their game against South Carolina as their Super Bowl because of how badly the Gamecocks beat them last season. That’s wrong and dumb as the Vols have real teams like Alabama and Georgia on the schedule. But I can tell you this, Deion and his Buffs are the Super Bowl for many teams. And that only makes things harder for Colorado.
