With college football returning in less than two weeks, it’s about that time to predict the New Year’s Six Bowls for the 2023 season. The Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl will be hosting the CFP Semi-finals in the last edition of the four-team playoff format. Next year, the playoff will expand to 12 teams and will look completely different.

Kirby Smart and Georgia have won the last two CFP National Championships.

Peach Bowl

Alabama vs. Clemson

This matchup used to be a CFP lock, but now it’s a NY6 bowl. I think Alabama and Clemson both come up short and don’t win their conference. I still think they both have really good seasons and set up this matchup in the Peach Bowl.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is interviewed by ESPN near quarterback Cade Klubnik (2), game MVP, after the game with North Carolina in the ACC Championship football gameat Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina Saturday, Dec 3, 2022. Clemson won 39-10.

Orange Bowl

LSU vs. Tulane

LSU failed to make a New Year’s Six bowl last season, but they will this year. They have a strong, talented team on both sides of the ball. I think they take on another Louisiana team in Tulane. I see Tulane being the best G5 team again this year and making another New Year’s Six bowl.

Tulane came back to upset USC in last season’s Cotton Bowl.

The Best Way to End the Scheduling Debate

Fiesta Bowl

USC vs. Ohio State

USC comes just short of the Playoff again. This time, they land in the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State. I still have Michigan making the CFP over the Buckeyes, but OSU still gets a NY6 bid. If this happens, I will be really excited to see this matchup.

Jan 2, 2023; Arlington, Texas, USA; USC Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley reacts before the game against the Tulane Green Wave in the 2023 Cotton Bowl at AT&T Stadium.

Cotton Bowl

Washington vs. Notre Dame

Washington is another Pac-12 team that has Playoff potential. However, I have them in the Cotton Bowl facing Notre Dame. I really like the Irish now that they have a good quarterback. I think Hartman will be the key to deciding what type of season the Fighting Irish have in 2023.

QB Sam Hartman transferred to Notre Dame from Wake Forest during the offseason.

Rose Bowl (CFP)

2. Michigan vs. 3 Texas

Now we get to the Playoff. I think Michigan beats Ohio State and wins the Big Ten again. This time, I have them facing Texas. I think the Longhorns are finally ready to break onto the scene. They have an explosive offense and have been recruiting very well. Sarkisian has a chance to do something special at UT this season.

Nov 25, 2022; Austin, Texas, USA; Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers (3) throws a pass during the second half against the Baylor Bears at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Sugar Bowl (CFP)

1. Georgia vs. 4. Florida State

I have Georgia making it back to the CFP for the third year in a row. Their talent, mixed with their easy schedule, sets them up nicely. I have Florida State making their return to the Playoff after nine years. I see them edging out Clemson and winning the ACC.

Georgia beat TCU 65-7 in last season’s National Championship.

National Championship

1. Georgia vs. 2. Michigan

I have the dawgs winning here again and completing the three-peat. I just think Georgia’s team is too loaded with talent to lose to Michigan. Kirby Smart always has them ready to play and somehow always has them thinking that they are being doubted. Not that they need any added motivation, but it sure does help.

Dec 3, 2022; Atlanta, GA, USA; Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs celebrate after their 50-30 victory over the LSU Tigers in the SEC Championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
