Draft Fact or Fiction: Anthony Richardson First Overall, Christian Gonzalez, Lukas Van Ness

In Mike Farrell’s Fact or Fiction — Draft Edition, he predicts whether Anthony Richardson will be drafted…

In today’s Fact or Fiction — NFL Draft edition — I look at three big recent topics around the NFL Draft and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Anthony Richardson will go No. 1 overall.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Some team will be tempted. The kid is 6’4″ and 240+ pounds and runs like a WR and jumps like a CB. But his intermediate passing at the combine was average, and it was noticed. He lacks starting experience, he’s very raw as a passer and very up and down, and while he will go top 10, he just won’t be the guy a team can trade up and take No. 1. It takes some draft capital to move up and if you do so you better not risk it on a project like Trey Lance and the 49ers. That’s who he reminds me of, even if he’s more athletic.

Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson (15) pulls back to throw as Tennessee defensive lineman Omari Thomas (21) approaches during the NCAA college football game on Saturday, September 24, 2022 in Knoxville, Tenn.

2. Christian Gonzalez secured CB1.

Farrell’s take: FACT

6’1″ and nearly 200 pounds with sub 4.4 speed and amazing hops have him CB1 for me and for many scouts. I love Devon Witherspoon from Illinois and Joey Porter Jr. from Penn State as well, but Gonzalez is just a freak with size who has shown he can shut down elite players at Oregon. He doesn’t get past the Eagles at No. 10.

Mar 3, 2023; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Oregon defensive back Christian Gonzalez (DB14) participates in drills at Lucas Oil Stadium.

3. Lukas Van Ness is now a round one player.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Van Ness wasn’t even a starter under Kirk Ferentz at Iowa, and now he’s a first rounder. He ran a 4.58 at 272 pounds and amazing 3-cone and short shuttle times, and he was productive with double-digit sacks the last two seasons. I have him landing in the 20-30 range now, and I wonder why the heck he never started? C’mon Kirk.
