In today’s Fact or Fiction — NFL Draft edition — I look at three big recent topics around the NFL Draft and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Caleb Williams is the No. 1 pick right now.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Right now I think that’s the case. Would I take him No. 1 overall? Not a chance as he’s got some maturity issues and I don’t think he can handle being a franchise guy. But the Chicago Bears likely don’t agree and if they don’t want him they can easily trade out and he can go No. 1.

Nov 4, 2023; Los Angeles, California, USA; USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams (13) interacts with Washington Huskies safety Mishael Powell (3) after Caleb Williams (13) scores a touchdown during the first quarter against the Washington Huskies at United Airlines Field at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

2. Joe Alt is the best player in the NFL Draft.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

That’s the talk out there from some scouts as the Notre Dame OT is expected to be a 10-12 year guy and potential Gold Jacket recipient. However, let’s not forget there’s a guy named Marvin Harrison Jr. who could be the most unique WR since Calvin Johnson. I’m going with MHJ.

Sep 9, 2023; Raleigh, North Carolina, USA; Notre Dame Fighting Irish tackle Joe Alt (76) during the first half at Carter-Finley Stadium.

3. The Commanders are all over Drake Maye.

Farrell’s take: FACT

The Commanders would love Williams as he’s a Maryland kid but Maye is just fine and they aren’t afraid of another Phil Longo/Mack Brown QB despite Sam Howell’s up and down nature. Maye is much better than Howell and I have him ahead of Williams from a talent and maturity aspect. The Commanders would love to land him.

Nov 11, 2023; Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye (10) looks to pass as Duke Blue Devils linebacker Tre Freeman (12) defends in the first overtime at Kenan Memorial Stadium.
