In today’s Fact or Fiction — NFL Draft edition — I look at three big recent topics around the NFL Draft and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.
1. Caleb Williams is a generational talent.
Farrell’s take: FICTION
The term generation talent is thrown around way too often, almost like a generation is a year or two. What about Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow coming out of college? Heck, what about Patrick Mahomes? If we count a generation as ten years, which is a stretch, then there is no way Caleb Williams is that talent.
He’s good. He’s overrated badly, but he’s still good. Williams can make magic but is also not a team player. He is in it for himself, and I don’t think he has the personality to lead a group of NFL men. Leadership is a huge component of generational talent, as we have seen with Tom Brady and Mahomes and what we have seen glimpses of from Burrow, Lawrence, Josh Allen, and others. Williams will not be a successful QB in the NFL despite his talent, and he is far from generational.
2. The Bears will regret moving on from Justin Fields.
Farrell’s take: FACT
It seems more and more like the Bears will take Williams and move on from Fields, and it’s a mistake to me. Fields may not be a polished passer yet, but he’s an elite athlete you can build around as he develops, like Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts. Top QBs need a few years to develop and need talent around them, and the Bears are a couple of years away from turning a corner with him. Throwing him aside to start over is foolish unless you’re sure he’s not the guy, and we don’t know that yet.

3. The Patriots will take a QB at No. 3.
Farrell’s take: FACT
The smart move would be to trade down and gain assets as they have so many needs, but Bill Belichick is gone, and he was consistent with that approach. His approach will influence the new regime, but I think seeing Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, or even JJ McCarthy sitting there at No. 3 will be too hard to pass up. Maybe they will surprise me and trade out or even go with future Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison Jr., but I have a suspicion they will land on a QB and roll the dice.
