Mike Farrell’s 2023 Draft Losers

Mike Farrell breaks down why the Bears, Cowboys, and others did not have a productive 2023 draft

1. Chicago Bears

— I don’t like Darnell Wright over Peter Skoronski, a local kid who is a much safer pick, and DT Gervon Dexter Sr. is a massive reach in round two. I like Zacch Pickens and Roschon Johnson, but I think they whiffed on their top two picks.

Sep 17, 2022; Knoxville, Tennessee, USA; Tennessee Volunteers offensive lineman Darnell Wright (58) blocks Akron Zips defensive lineman Kyle Thomas (55) during the first half at Neyland Stadium.

2. Dallas Cowboys

— Mazi Smith is lazy, and they should have learned from Taco Charlton about elite physical prospects from Michigan who don’t produce and lack effort. Luke Schoonmaker is also a reach of sorts. I like Deuce Vaughn, but they could have done better at the top of the draft.

Dec 31, 2022; Glendale, Arizona, USA; Michigan Wolverines defensive lineman Mazi Smith (58) celebrates a play against the TCU Horned Frogs in the 2022 Fiesta Bowl at State Farm Stadium.

3. Green Bay Packers

— Lukas Van Ness is a physical freak, but No. 13 is too high when they could have gone TE Dalton Kinkaid to help Jordan Love. And there was better value at WR than Jayden Reed.

Mar 2, 2023; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Iowa defensive lineman Lukas Van Ness (DL47) participates in drills during the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium.

4. San Francisco 49ers

— Their first pick was round three, but they didn’t get a lot of value in this draft, and I’m puzzled by two TEs taken.

5. Washington Commanders

— Emmanuel Forbes is a risk taker and went too high for me when Christian Gonzalez and others were there. And where did they address OT? I like Braeden Daniels, but he’s not a tackle to me.

Mar 3, 2023; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Mississippi State defensive back Emmanuel Forbes (DB12) participates in drills at Lucas Oil Stadium.
