Mind of Mike: Caleb Williams’ Red Flags Prevent Him From Being QB1

You can call me whatever you want, I’ve heard it all. But if I’m the Chicago Bears I’m worried.

Caleb Williams is an immense talent. His ability to extend the play and make something out of nothing is akin to Patrick Mahomes. On talent alone, he’s the No. 1 pick and an easy choice for the Bears. But then there’s everything else.

What about all this stuff…

Oh wow, Caleb Williams is crying on the sidelines after losing to Washington.https://t.co/AGGR5MVnPg pic.twitter.com/luZBje8FQ8

Crying in your mom’s lap in the stands after a loss? Nail polish with opponent disrespect on them? Wearing dresses? What appears to be lipstick and a pink phone? It’s 2024 and we are all-inclusive people either by choice or out of social conformity but a football locker room is the opposite. I’m sorry, there is no way to sugarcoat it. There is no inclusion, there is no understanding and there is no respect for those who are different. Football locker rooms are macho, old-school, and unyielding. Simply put, you better be damned good like Dennis Rodman if you are going to be as different as Williams. And that doesn’t even take into account the ego and attitude issues many have known about since he was in high school and illustrated here…

The bottom line is this. Talent or not, Williams is going to be the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft and is expected to be the franchise leader of the Chicago Bears. And Bears fans, like most NFL fans, aren’t overly enamored with nail polish, lipstick, and crying. And the roster won’t be either. If Williams doesn’t win early and often, things could get ugly in Chicago.

I have Williams No. 4 on my QB board for the reasons above. Are they dumb reasons? To some they are. But to those without their head in the sand and who are honest about society, those reasons are everything.

Oct 8, 2022; Los Angeles, California, USA; USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams (13) attempts a pass while Washington State Cougars linebacker Daiyan Henley (1) tackles him.

I famously said the Chiefs made a massive mistake trading up to draft Patrick Mahomes in 2017. I liked DeShaun Watson much better and thought that was their move. I was wrong. Why? Watson has amazing talent and showed so at Clemson and with the Texans but he became an off-field nightmare. And Mahomes? He’s the ultimate team-first guy and handles himself well in every fashion. Similar talent but different priorities. So that’s why I like Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and JJ McCarthy better. I’ve learned my lesson.

So have at it Bears and good luck to you. Hopefully, the talent can overcome all the other massive red flags people are possibly avoiding or too afraid to address.
