In today’s Fact or Fiction I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. DJ Lagway can save Billy Napier.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Graham Mertz is done and now it’s onto the future with Lagway getting the reins of the offense. But even if Lagway suddenly turns spectacular, and he’s only shown flashes so far, Napier won’t survive. There have been too many mistakes, penalties and poor coaching decisions for him to reach 7-5 which I think is the minimum for survival. Georgia, Texas, LSU and Ole Miss loom.

2. Penn State has what it takes to win it all.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Many will disagree with this but Penn State has a good running game, a solid offensive line and an above average defense. And their quarterback, Drew Allar, is starting to show signs of being special. They lack elite wide receivers and Tyler Warren has to be figured out by opposing defenses soon (or does he?) so I worry the passing game might not be dynamic enough in a shootout. But this team has the pieces.

3. Neal Brown is doing enough to keep his job.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Fans always want more and the Rich Rod days spoiled them to an extent but the goal for West Virginia should be to make noise in the Big 12 once in awhile and go to bowl games. In the current climate they won’t be national title contenders and they’ve never had a home recruiting edge. The loss to Iowa State is disappointing but wins over Kansas and Oklahoma State are solid. If he wins 4 of his next 6 and goes 7-5 I think he keeps his job and rightly so.
