Fact or Fiction: MSU Wanted Urban Meyer, Ewers vs. Gabriel, Utah NIL

Mike Farrell looks if Michigan State wanted Urban Meyer, the Ewers vs. Gabriel debate, and Utah’s new NIL deal

In today’s Fact or Fiction I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Michigan State had true interest in Urban Meyer.

Farrell’s take: FACT

They kicked the tires so to speak and amazingly the boosters who coughed up $100 million to lure 5-7 disaster Mel Tucker were willing to do the same for Meyer who has his own off-the-field issues and controversies. The difference? Meyer could win and win big at MSU. But Urban was never interested. If he’s getting back into coaching it’s going to be with one of the big boys — USC, Texas, LSU or heck maybe even Florida — teams that can win it all quickly with recruiting and NIL. Michigan State isn’t it and it’s honestly more of a disaster internally than many know.

Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer watches his team during a punt return against Northwestern Wildcats during the 2nd quarter in the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis, Ind on December 1, 2018.

2. Quinn Ewers is better than Dillon Gabriel.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Obviously they play this weekend and from an NFL Draft standpoint, this isn’t close. Ewers has a round-one grade while Gabriel is a mid-rounder. But the stats make some think Gabriel is better with his 75% completion rate and more yards and scores. The problem? Gabriel has played no one. I like him, he’s a talented kid but Arkansas State, Tulsa, Cincinnati and the rest aren’t great teams while Ewers has played ranked teams in Alabama and Kansas and a sneaky tough Wyoming team. I think we’ll see the difference between the two this weekend.

Nov 25, 2022; Austin, Texas, USA; Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers (3) throws a pass during the second half against the Baylor Bears at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

3. Utah just upped the NIL ante.

Farrell’s take: FACT

A new leased truck for every player on the team? From a program with a solid but unspectacular NIL collective. Stand back. The massive NIL programs have just been put on notice and will need to up their games big time. We are probably less than a couple years away from every player’s family getting a new house. I’m serious.
