Fact or Fiction: Napier’s Seat is Hot, Alex Orji at QB, and Clemson Isn’t Done Yet

Fact or Fiction: Is Alex Orji the new QB, Napier’s job at risk, and Clemson’s bounce back?

In today’s Fact or Fiction I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Billy Napier might be coaching his final game for the Gators on Saturday

My Take: FACT

Billy Napier entered his third season in Gainesville with high expectations, but the Gators have been one of the worst Power 5 teams in the country thus far. After losing by double digits at home to both Miami and Texas A&M, Napier’s seat is arguably the hottest in the country. The Gators travel to Davis Wade Stadium to face Mississippi State on Saturday, where they are 6-point road favorites. However, a Mississippi State upset wouldn’t be surprising, and a loss could lead to Napier’s dismissal by Monday.

2. Alex Orji can fix the Michigan offense

My Take: FICTION

Blue Team quarterback Alex Orji (10) makes a pass against Maize Team during the second half of the spring game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

After Davis Warren struggled over the past three weeks, head coach Sherrone Moore decided to make a change and give Alex Orji the keys to the offense. Orji and Warren competed during spring ball for the starting job, with Warren narrowly winning. Given Warren’s poor performance, it’s hard to imagine Orji doing worse, but his first test comes against USC on Saturday. Orji’s dual-threat ability, paired with Donovan Edwards, could help, though it remains to be seen if Orji can turn things around against such a tough opponent.

3. Clemson is not done yet

My Take: FACT

Sep 4, 2023; Durham, North Carolina, USA; Clemson Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik (2) talks with head coach Dabo Swinney during the fourth quarter of the season-opening game at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C.

After Clemson was beaten by Georgia in week one, many were quick to count out the Tigers and QB Cade Klubnik. Klubnik struggled against the UGA defense, and there were calls for Dabo Swinney to bench the former 5-star recruit. However, Klubnik and the Tigers bounced back impressively in week two, defeating Appalachian State 66-20. Klubnik went 24/26 for 378 yards and 5 touchdowns. The team looked much better against lesser talent and moved up to No. 20 in the AP Poll ahead of this weekend’s matchup against NC State. Klubnik could have regained his confidence, and with NC State having given up 51 points to Tennessee, Clemson has another opportunity to prove they’re not quite done yet. With a struggling ACC outside of Miami, Clemson still has the talent to compete.
