The scoreboard against Colorado on Friday read 52-0 in favor of the Buffaloes, but Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy seemed to be reading from a different script, insisting that their team’s performance was ‘not as bad as it looked.’
In his post-game press conference, Gundy said the following:
“The numbers won’t show up, but we actually played pretty good”

I don’t know what game Gundy was watching, the excuses didn’t match the game. They were never competitive all game. Oklahoma State was down 21-0 before the end of the first quarter, and in the second half, it looked like Colorado might cover the game’s point total themselves, which closed in the mid-60s.

The Cowboys had 147 total yards to Colorado’s 471. The Cowboys averaged 2.3 yards per play, and the Buffaloes averaged 6.6. Friday was the exclamation point of the Oklahoma State season.
The Cowboys started the season 3-0 and finished 3-9. The entire season was a complete disappointment, especially with many returning starters. Offensively, they returned their O-line, quarterback, and star running back Ollie Gordon II, along with numerous players on defense.
On Friday, the Cowboys looked unprepared and unmotivated. Unfortunately, that has been the case multiple times this season.
When you lose 52-0 and have the lack of productivity on offense that they had, it’s delusional and concerning to think the team played well.
That game was not closer than the scoreboard. It was an absolute blowout, and the coaching staff was already in offseason mode.
In a season with a new look Big 12 conference with Oklahoma and Texas gone and the level of team and coaching experience, this was a complete dud by Gundy and his staff.
Additionally, Gundy also said they didn’t have a very good offensive plan and couldn’t make adjustments. His excuses after the game sound like Gundy knows the poor work he did this season and is trying to deflect from what will be a challenging offseason.
This was his 20th season in Stillwater. They went from being a pre-season top 20 team to a squad that only won 3 games and couldn’t cover a two-touchdown underdog spread to finish the season.
This 3-9 season comes just one season after playing in the 2023 Big 12 championship game.
This wasn’t the first time this season that Gundy has made some weird, delusional comments. The coach’s attitude will be something the Oklahoma State higher-ups will keep an eye on going into next season.
After a 42–21 loss to Arizona State, he called the fans who are complaining, weak.
Gundy said, “In most cases, the people who are negative and voicing their opinions are the same ones that can’t pay their own bills. They’re not taking care of themselves, they’re not taking care of their own family.”

It’s unlikely Gundy will be fired, given his recent success and his multimillion-dollar buyout. However, this off-season, he will need to take a good look in the mirror because there was nothing more delusional than losing 52 to nothing with less than 200 yards of offense and saying your team played well. Also nothing is more out of touch than attacking the University fan base.
Without a transformation in attitude, team preparation and performance next season, the Cowboy could be riding away sooner rather than later. I’d be surprised if there weren’t changes to the coaching staff during the off-season. At the very least, so Gundy doesn’t take the heat all himself.
