Mike on Sports: Steph the GOAT of This Generation

The gold medal game proved that Steph Curry is the basketball GOAT of this generation

I focus on football, I’m an expert on football. But as a sports fan, I have opinions on many different sports. In this edition of Mike On Sports, I talk about how Steph Curry proved he’s the goat of this generation over LeBron James and Kevin Durant.

Does anyone have Curry ranked ahead of LeBron on their all-time NBA players list? Not likely. Ahead of Durant? Some, but that’s probably 50/50. But the gold medal game against France proved it. He’s just better than those two in this generation.

Aug 10, 2024; Paris, France; United States shooting guard Stephen Curry (4) and guard LeBron James (6) and guard Kevin Durant (7) celebrate with their gold medals on the podium after defeating France in the men's basketball gold medal game during the Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games at Accor Arena.

LeBron is like 6-8 and 260 pounds or whatever you want to list him. Durant avoids being called a 7-footer but he’s 7-feet tall. Both are remarkable basketball players. LeBron is the all-time leading scorer and an argument could be made that Durant is an even better natural scorer. But they have amazing advantages with their size and length.

Curry is listed 6-2 but he’s probably a bit shorter. Sure, he can create off the dribble but the majority of the damage he does is from way downtown. He’s the greatest pure shooter we’ve ever seen and this comes from a huge Reggie Miller fan. The fact that he can dominate, the fact that he can take over games, the fact that he can finish teams all from 23-feet and beyond is remarkable. And it makes him better.

LeBron went to Miami with Dwayne Wade and won titles but proved he can do it on his own by heading back to Cleveland and winning one. But the majority of his titles were when he teamed with guys like Wade and Anthony Davis. Durant had to go to Golden State and join Curry to win his titles as he’s been unable to do so as the lead dog. Steph won a title before Durant arrived and won a title after he left. While LeBron and Durant needed to join others to win big, Curry won big with or without huge names.

And when the gold medal was on the line, who took over? Curry. He’s changed the game of basketball as guys like Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and others did before him.

This may seem like an overreaction in the moment but I’d rank the NBA players on the gold medal team when it comes to legacy as follows…

1. Steph Curry

2. LeBron James

3. Kevin Durant

4. Anthony Davis

5. Jayson Tatum

6. Joel Embid

7. Bam Adebayo

8. Jrue Holiday

9. Devin Booker

10. Anthony Edwards

11. Tyrese Haliburton

12. Derrick White
