In the game we love so much, it takes a special individual to embrace the role of quarterback. Quarterbacks must know everyone’s assignment, the play calls, the pass progression, and how to protect themselves up front—just to name a few responsibilities. Jalen Hurts faced adversity where many would have crumbled. From being pulled in the national championship game to becoming an MVP-caliber quarterback in the NFL, Hurts’ journey is a testament to perseverance, self-belief, and an unshakable work ethic.

Chapter One: Alabama

Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts (2) carries for the go ahead touchdown against Georgia in the SEC Championship Game at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga., on Saturday December 1, 2018.

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, became home for a young Jalen Hurts in 2016. He made an immediate impact as a freshman, earning multiple accolades:

• 2016 AP SEC Newcomer of the Year

• 2016 SEC Freshman of the Year

But in 2018, Hurts faced the kind of adversity no starting quarterback wants to experience. On national television, in the biggest game of the year—the national championship against Georgia—he was benched in favor of Tua Tagovailoa. Many players in his position would have quit, transferred, or complained about the decision. Hurts did the opposite. He supported his teammate, remained committed to Alabama, and returned for another season.

That following year, despite seeing minimal playing time, he continued to work and stay ready. His patience paid off in the SEC Championship Game when he was called upon to replace an injured Tagovailoa. Hurts seized the moment, leading Alabama to a dramatic victory. His response to adversity in that moment would define his career and set the foundation for his future success.

Chapter Two: Oklahoma

Dec 28, 2019; Atlanta, Georgia, USA; Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Jalen Hurts (1) reacts during the fourth quarter of the 2019 Peach Bowl college football playoff semifinal game between the LSU Tigers and the Oklahoma Sooners at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Hurts wasn’t content being a backup at Alabama and bet on himself. For his senior year he transferred to Oklahoma, determined to prove himself as a complete quarterback. Under the guidance of head coach Lincoln Riley, Hurts refined his passing ability, adapted to a new system, and elevated his game to new heights.

His determination was on full display as he led the Sooners to the College Football Playoff and finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting. In just one season, he proved that setbacks are merely obstacles meant to be conquered. Hurts’ journey was far from over, but his time at Alabama and Oklahoma had already cemented his reputation as a player who thrived under pressure, never backed down, and always put the team first.

Chapter Three:  NFL Criticism

Sep 6, 2024; Sao Paulo, BRA; Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts (1) scrambles during the first half against the Green Bay Packers at Neo Quimica Arena.

Despite his success at Oklahoma, many scouts doubted Hurts’ ability to thrive at the next level. Critics questioned his accuracy, pocket presence, and overall ceiling as a passer. When the Philadelphia Eagles selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, he was widely viewed as a backup to Carson Wentz.

By 2021 Hurts earned the starting role and never looked back. In 2022 he silenced the doubters by leading the Eagles to a Super Bowl appearance, proving that his talent is elite. No stage is too big for him. Hurts was even criticized after the Super Bowl. It’s hilarious when people put their own foot in their mouth.

What Makes Hurts Mentally Tough?

• Poise Under Pressure – No matter the situation, Hurts remains unfazed. Whether leading a game-winning drive or bouncing back from a turnover, he never lets the moment define him.

• Work Ethic – Known for his relentless preparation, Hurts is always striving to improve. Some would even call him a perfectionist.

• Leadership & Accountability – His dedication commands respect in the locker room. He holds himself accountable, leads by example, and fosters a winning culture—qualities that contribute to championships.

• Emotional Maturity – Football is an emotional game, but Hurts never lets the highs get too high or the lows too low. He remains composed, setting the standard for professionalism.

What Young QBs Can Learn from Jalen Hurts

• Control What You Can Control – When he was benched at Alabama, he didn’t pout—he worked harder.

• Use Setbacks as Motivation – Doubters will always exist. If they could do what you do, they would. Instead of letting criticism affect you, use it as fuel to improve.

• Believe in Yourself – The world will doubt you, but your self-belief has to be stronger than anyone else’s. Be confident, but stay humble—just like Hurts.

Final Thoughts

Jalen Hurts is more than just a quarterback—he’s the blueprint for what a quarterback should be. His resilience, mental toughness, and self-belief make him the ideal leader. His journey proves that adversity isn’t the end of the road—it’s an opportunity to grow and become better. Put major respect on his name!
