With action in the transfer portal slowing down, it is time to take a closer look at how each P4 school did during this cycle. Up now are the Stanford Cardinal
The skinny: Due to its academic standards, Stanford will never be able to take advantage of the transfer portal as most other schools do. With this additional hurdle, head coach Troy Taylor enters his second season after a 3-9 finish in 2023, and now must figure out how to make the Cardinal relevant again without this huge advantage. Despite being hindered in the portal, the Cardinal were still able to add a few defensive pieces as they prepare for their first season in the ACC.

Key losses: TE Benjamin Yurosek (Georgia), DL Jaxson Moi (Tennessee)
Key additions: LB Jahsiah Galvan (Northern Iowa), DL Clay Patterson (UNLV), DB Jaivion Green (Washington)
Final thoughts: While the offense, especially the line and running game, could’ve used a boost from the portal, neither received help. Instead, the notable portable additions came on the defensive side of the ball, which also needed an influx of talent after a lackluster performance in 2023. LB Jahsiah Galvan is a young, intriguing addition, who initially committed to Wisconsin before flipping to Stanford. While the linebacker group may be the deepest position on defense, Galvan may prove to be a very valuable addition down the line. Clay Patterson, a grad-transfer from Yale who had a very brief pitstop at UNLV, should provide a jolt for the line, while Jaivion Green, who showed potential at Washington while providing depth for an experienced Huskies’ secondary, will likely see immediate playing time at safety. Stanford’s success will likely never be determined by its use of the portal, but the Cardinal hope that the few players they are able to add can provide a boost to their existing roster.
