While the P4 to P4 transfers get the most attention, during every transfer portal cycle more and more FCS transfers are making an impact at the highest level. This year may prove to be the most productive for FCS transfers as numerous are in position to make a statement in 2024. Here are five to watch in the Big Ten:
WR Dymere Miller – Rutgers (Monmouth)
The skinny: While the quarterback situation at Rutgers still needs to find some resolution during this spring and summer, if the Scarlet Knights do manage to accomplish this, they have added a potentially dynamic receiver. Miller, an All-American in 2023, dominated last season with 90 receptions for 1,295 yards and nine touchdowns. He will provide a much needed spark to the Scarlet Knights’ passing game if a quarterback rises to the occasion.
QB Max Brosmer – Minnesota (New Hampshire)
The skinny: With Minnesota’s passing game being somewhat inconsistent recently, the Gophers hope that adding Brosmer will revitalize that aspect of the offense. He arrives in Minneapolis after passing for an FCS leading 3,449 yards during the 2023 season, along with 29 touchdown passes and only six interceptions. The keys to the offense will be handed over to him so it will be interesting to see how quickly he can become comfortable at the P4 level.
QB Tommy Schuster – Michigan State (North Dakota)
The skinny: While all the quarterback hype in East Lansing revolves around another transfer addition, Aidan Chiles, Schuster should prove to be invaluable. Chiles arrives with an amazing amount of potential, but he has also never started a college game. There are bound to be inconsistencies during the 2024 season for him, so having someone of Schuster’s experience, which includes five collegiate seasons and 9,075 passing yards, will only prove to be helpful.
OL Luke Newman – Michigan State (Holy Cross)
The skinny: There has been plenty of roster turnover at Michigan State since the conclusion of the 2023 season, which can be expected after a head coaching change. While many important pieces have been added, it may be Newman who proves to be one of the most vital. A native of Michigan, his return home adds experience and versatility to the Spartans’ offensive line. While he will likely play guard in East Lansing, after four seasons at tackle with Holy Cross, he is a very viable option there too if needed.

TE Cole Rusk – Illinois (Murray State)
The skinny: Rusk, an FCS All-American, piled up the offers after entering the transfer portal, but at the end decided to return to his home state to play for the Illini. At 6-foot-6 and 245-pounds, he impressed in his one season with the Racers after transferring in from Eastern Michigan with 39 receptions for 512 yards and six touchdowns. In Champaign, he will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
