With the rosters set, at least until spring ball is over, we have seen many starting QB’s change schools this offseason. While the likes of Hartman, Leary, Armstrong, and DJU get most of the press there are several accomplished and talented QB’s who ended up at G5 schools and will be guys to look for this spring and fall. One of these guys left a backup role at a P5 school but the rest have traded one G5 job for another. Here are 5 QB’s to keep an eye on who have a new home in the G5.
Davis Brin
Tulsa —> Georgia Southern
The guy I am the most excited to watch, Brin threw for over 2,000 yards and 17 TD’s at Tulsa last year. But with the change in coaching he decided to transfer to Georgia Southern and be part of Clay Helton’s amazing reclamation project. Few expected the Eagles to be as solid as they were in 2022 and this should only get better replacing Kyle Van Trease with Brin. For those of you, like me, who play college fantasy football, Brin will be a guy to monitor very high in drafts where Sun Belt players are available.
Malik Hornsby
Arkansas —> Texas State
Hornsby never was going to be the guy for the Razorbacks. We know that after seeing how things went when K.J. Jefferson got hurt. But he’s not devoid of tools either. Hornsby is going to be an interesting component for new coach GJ Kinne to work with at Texas State. Kinne has boasted some high flying offenses, including this past year at FCS Incarnate Word. How he schemes to utilize the dual threat Hornsby will go along ways in the Bobcats success.

Layne Hatcher
Texas State —> Ball St.
As is commonplace with the portal, one goes in and one goes out. Texas State lost Layne Hatcher, who will be attending his 4th college after Alabama, Arkansas State, and Texas State. Hatcher has thrown for an impressive 10,000 yards and 84 TD’s in his college career so far and should step in and start for Mike Neu immediately. Midweek MACtion will be a lot of fun with accomplished veterans like Hatcher suiting up, as if sickos like us needed another excuse to watch Tuesday and Wednesday night games.

Mikey Keene
UCF—> Fresno St.
Another guy who probably doesn’t have the game to be a solid P5 starter but still has enough skill to give G5 defenses fits. Keene has the biggest shoes to fill of anyone on this list, as he takes over for Jake Haener who was one of the most accomplished signal callers in Bulldog history. But in Jeff Tedford, Keene will get a proven veteran mentor who’s coached multiple QB’s who’ve played on Sundays. Fresno St. at Purdue in week 1 will be a heck of a transfer portal QB battle in Hudson Card vs. Keene. The Bulldogs could be a team to watch in the Mountain West in 2023.

Hank Bachmeier
Boise St. —> Louisiana Tech
Bachmeier entered the portal early, midseason so he didn’t burn his last year of eligibility. In his career he’s thrown for 6,000 yards and 41 TD’s while going 20-9 in the process. Sonnie Cumbie will be pleased to get a veteran QB who’s seen it all, even if only for one season. The schedule looks favorable, they’ve brought in other guys from the portal, and year 2 under the new staff should see an improvement on the 3-9 season Tech just had. Bachmeier will need to impress if he has ambitions of playing professionally beyond 2023.
