Johnson came to UCLA the JUCO route and was the #2 JUCO ILB in the 2020 class. The former Bruin is listed at 6′ and 235 lbs. He started 17 games over the last two seasons. In 2020 he led the team in sacks (5 1/2) and tackles (44). Caleb made the decision to go to Miami over Texas, who was also pursuing the playmaking defender.
Caleb Johnson does a great job blitzing the QB. He shows solid range and some ability in coverage. Mario Cristobal has to be excited to get a quality player he saw first hand in the Pac 12 joining him in Coral Gables. The Canes certainly need more playmakers as they try to make the transition to the physical identity Cristobal is instilling.
The Hurricanes will try to compete for an ACC Coastal division title right away. Cristobal won a pair of Pac 12 championships while at Oregon. Miami came in second in the coastal a season ago, and has only won the division once in program history. With the influx of new talent, and a established coach with Miami ties, the impact can be immediate.
Here's a Will Outside with Caleb Johnson blitzing at the Will, with (probably) a Cover 3 Sky (Boundary Safety underneath) behind it. UCLA covered up an all hitches pass concept long enough for Johnson and End Mitchell Agude got home on the quarterback pic.twitter.com/KESNuHfBQf
