Portal Fact or Fiction: Buckeyes QB Problem, Lambert-Smith’s New Home, Vols Lose Top LB

Mike Farrell determines if OSU will lose someone from the QB room to the portal, where the former PSU receiver will land…

In today’s Fact or Fiction — transfer portal edition — I look at three big recent topics from the transfer portal and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. The Buckeyes will lose a QB to the portal.

Farrell’s take: FACT

It’s inevitable. When they took Julian Sayin from Alabama, the QB room became crowded, and the odd man out could be Lincoln Kienholz, who is rumored to be headed elsewhere. Devin Brown would be funny after essentially calling people morons for suggesting it, but I think he stays, as does Air Noland, who is a freshman like Sayin. With Will Howard as the likely starter, I’d say Kienholz could be gone.

Oct 14, 2023; West Lafayette, Indiana, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Devin Brown (33) runs for a touchdown during the first half at Ross-Ade Stadium.

2. WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith will land close to home.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

The WR hails from Virginia, so many assume UNC, Virginia Tech, NC State, or UVa will be the choice as he leaves Penn State, but I think geography won’t matter. I have a feeling he will land at a higher profile program like perhaps Miami, USC or someplace else. It makes sense to go home, but I think he wants to be tied to a higher-profile offense and an OC who can utilize his skills more than PSU did.

Penn State wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith (1) motions to the crowd after scoring a touchdown on a 57-yard reception late in the fourth quarter of an NCAA football game against Indiana at Beaver Stadium Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, in State College, Pa. Lambert-Smith's touchdown broke a 24-24 tie and helped seal a 33-24 win for the Nittany Lions.

3. LB Elijah Herring is a surprise portal entry.

Farrell’s take: FACT

The Vols LB was their leading tackler last season, but Keenan Pili is back, and he was likely to be a backup. That being said, it was surprising to see him announce he’s entering, especially with his younger brother on the Vols roster. Ole Miss? Louisville? Colorado? Time will tell.

Jan 1, 2024; Orlando, FL, USA; Tennessee Volunteers defensive lineman James Pearce Jr. (27), linebacker Elijah Herring (44) and defensive back Jaylen McCollough (2) celebrate a sack against the Iowa Hawkeyes during the third quarter at Camping World Stadium.
