In today’s Fact or Fiction — transfer portal edition — I look at three big recent topics from the transfer portal and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Jaxson Dart just got a lot better.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Lane Kiffin is at it again in the transfer portal and the addition of Tre Harris and Zakhari Franklin makes things a lot easier for Dart — if he can win the job. Franklin is a catch and run waterbug who makes QBs look great with YAC and Harris is a big target who wins 50/50 battles with ease. Dart had accuracy issues last season but Harris will bail him out on poorly thrown balls and Franklin gets elite separation. Life just got easier for Dart.

Dec 2, 2022; San Antonio, Texas, USA; UTSA Roadrunners wide receiver Zakhari Franklin (4) scores a touchdown in the second half against the North Texas Mean Green at the Alamodome.

2. Sam Hartman is a top five QB next season.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

I see Hartman on some lists as high as 5 in the nation but I don’t see it. That’s not because he lacks talent as he’s an efficient passer and a good fit for the Notre Dame offense. It’s that there are so many talented QBs in college football next season. How can he be ahead of any of these guys — Caleb Williams (USC), Drake Maye (UNC), Bo Nix (Oregon), Michael Penix Jr. (Washington) and Jordan Travis ( FSU)? And add in JJ McCarthy (Michigan), Jayden Daniels (LSU), Cam Rising (Utah) and some others and it’s tough to crack that top five.

Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman (10) warms up during the Notre Dame Blue-Gold Spring Football game on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend.

3. Ole Miss now has the best transfer class in the SEC.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Not quite but they are in the top 10 and a case can be made for top five with their recent additions. LSU and Auburn both have big time portal classes and I have Brian Kelly’s class No. 1 in the SEC led by guys like LB Omar Speights, DB Duce Chestnut, DB Denver Harris and WR Aaron Anderson.

Oct 8, 2022; Nashville, Tennessee, USA; Mississippi Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin and other coaches celebrate after a recovered fumble against the Vanderbilt Commodores during the second half at FirstBank Stadium.
