Portal Fact or Fiction: Tyler Shough at Louisville, Brock Vandagriff Starting, Trevor Etienne’s Leader

Mike Farrell on whether Tyler Shough will have success under Jeff Brohm, if Brock Vandagriff will start for Kentucky…

In today’s Fact or Fiction — transfer portal edition — I look at three big recent topics from the transfer portal and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Tyler Shough is an upgrade from Jack Plummer.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Shough has a higher ceiling with a better arm and a bit more size, but he’s been consistently injured over and over again, so unless he can stay on the field, he won’t be an upgrade. Even if he is healthy he has some of the same qualities of Plummer as he tends to make bad decisions and throw the ball into traffic. Jeff Brohm is a good coach, but he will likely get the same out of Shough that he got out of Plummer.

Former Texas Tech quarterback Tyler Shough (@tylershough2) is transferring to Louisville, he told ESPN. Shough, 24, will be a seventh-year senior who turns 25 next year. He’s played at both Oregon and Texas Tech since starting his college career in 2018. pic.twitter.com/OHyxwzSg7d

2. Brock Vandagriff will start at Kentucky.

Farrell’s take: FACT

He’s a long way removed from his 5-star days, but let’s remember that Vandagriff has played in the UGA system for years now, and the speed of practice and the players he’s been going against will give him an edge. And Kentucky tends to lean towards portal QBs as their starter and I don’t think he would have picked the Wildcats without some assurances. He will be the starter.

Georgia quarterback Brock Vandagriff (12) moves the ball down the field during the G-Day spring football game in Athens, Ga., on Saturday, April 16, 2022.

3. LSU is a team to beat for Trevor Etienne.

Farrell’s take: FACT

It makes sense, right? The Louisiana native could go home, and LSU gets a much-needed back who can be an all-purpose player in the offense. Clemson makes sense as well, with his brother Travis having starred there, and many others will be in play, but you can bet LSU will be heavily involved.

Florida Gators running back Trevor Etienne (7) rushes with the ball while Florida State Seminoles linebacker Tatum Bethune (15) and Florida State Seminoles defensive back Azareye'h Thomas (20) attempt to tackle during the first half at Steve Spurrier Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, FL on Saturday, November 25, 2023.
