Auburn has one of the worst QB rooms in the SEC right now. It has been widely known that they have been looking for their next play-caller but have just missed on everyone. When he entered the portal, Grayson McCall was seen as a lock to Auburn but decided to go back to Coastal Carolina instead. Hugh Freeze also went after former Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders, who chose Ole Miss. A questionable decision, but still another miss for Auburn. That leaves the question of who is left for Auburn to go after in the portal.
Dylan Hopkins- UAB
Looking through who is still available in the portal, outside the top few guys available, Dylan Hopkins stood out. He is currently rated as a three-star but is in state and very close to Auburn. He also has been excellent for the Blazers, with 1,913 yards passing on 215 attempts in 2022. He had even more in 2021, with 2,274 yards. Hopkins is flying under the radar right now and could be a quiet steal for Auburn.

Carson May- Iowa
I do not think Carson May should be Auburn’s first target should be Carson May just because of how young he is. Auburn needs someone who they can plug in now. However, May is one of the top quarterbacks available in the portal now. The former three-star did not get any playing time in Iowa City, so it is tough to judge how he would do for the Tigers.

Chance Nolan- Oregon State
According to numerous rankings, Chance Nolan is the best QB left in the portal. He is rumored to be going to Indiana. However, the Hoosiers already go Tayven Jackson from Tennessee, so I find it unlikely that Nolan could end up there. With that being said, Hugh Freeze needs to go after Chance Nolan hard. He is likely going to be the best QB left for the rest of the portal cycle.

Sam Huard- Washington
The former five-star is also one of the best quarterbacks left in the portal right now. This is also the only QB Auburn has been rumored to reach out to. With Michael Penix Jr. returning to Washington, there was not much playing time in the cards for Huard, but I think going to Auburn could change that. He still has a lot of eligibility left, and a whole lot of potential, would be an excellent pick-up for the Tigers.

Could Auburn just turn back to Robby Ashford?
The short answer is they probably shouldn’t. Robby Ashford has proven to be a decent dual-threat QB. In a few games this year, he even ran for more than he threw. To me, that is a little alarming, and I would rather have someone who can make more throws than run the football. However, considering if they do not get anyone in the portal the only two people behind him are a redshirt freshman and a true freshman, it would be their best option.
