Portal Scout Elena Schwegman breaks down Keon Coleman, Trey Amos, and other portal prospects

Keon Coleman – WR

2022 Team: Michigan State

2023 Team: FSU

At 6’4” and 210 lbs, Coleman has very good size for an outside wideout. Naturally a very talented athlete with great balance and body control. Has solid speed, not a burner but consistently wins with his size. Able to consistently put himself in a dominant position against his defender to bring down contested catches and 50/50 balls. Very good at adjusting to the ball, able to put himself in awkward positions to make the catch – elite hands. Plays very physical, and is very hard to bring down after the catch due to his size and strength.

Coleman was Michigan State’s leading receiver and go-to guy. He is a freak athlete who originally played both football and basketball for the Spartans before deciding to focus on football. His tremendous catching abilities makes him a threat in any situation and a great target on third downs and in the redzone. His physical play style and size allows him to take advantage of smaller corners as he wins vertically and pushes through contact for extra yards. Michigan State will surely miss Coleman who tallied seven touchdowns and almost 800 receiving yards. The Florida State Seminoles will look to take full advantage of Coleman’s abilities next season and will likely expect similar production from the receiver as he competes with FSU’s leading receiver last season, Johnny Wilson, for touches.

Former #MSU WR Keon Coleman joins a talented #FloridaState wideout room, another big bodied target that thrives at the catch point.

Trey Amos – CB

2022 Team: UL Lafayette

2023 Team: Alabama

Very good size at 6’1” and 190 lbs. Physical player at the line of scrimmage and during routes, uses his hands a lot which could get him into trouble at times. Very good in coverage, able to pedal efficiently and flip his hips well to stay on his man and also has very good burst and closing speed to recover as needed. Watches the QB and his man well in zone coverage, always turning his head and making a play on the ball. Can improve his tackling a bit by chopping his feet more in the open field and wrapping up instead of diving at legs.

Amos was a hot commodity in the transfer portal, and Alabama will be glad they were able to secure his commitment. Amos brings 3 years of experience and making a great impact with Louisiana Lafayette since his true freshman season. His athleticism and twitch coupled with his size make him an intriguing talent and also displays the versatility to handle larger receivers while playing safety or nickel if needed.

Former UL Cornerback Trey Amos had a lot of interest in the Transfer Portal, but ultimately, the New Iberia native picked the Alabama Crimson Tide for his next home. @TreyAmos21 @GeauxBigRed https://t.co/4Ggn3BQk1h pic.twitter.com/J1584ilOEU

Quick Reactions to USA Today Coaches Poll

Andre Sam – SAF

2022 Team: Tulane

2023 Team: LSU

Very good frame at 6’1” and 180 lbs. Plays from a low power base at all times, constantly moving and chopping his feet which allows him to have great COD. Twitchy and intense player who is very good at planting and driving to the ball. Very good burst and closing speed. Good at reading the play and reacting accordingly. Excels in the run game and pass rush scenarios with his ability to fly into the backfield and make open field tackles. Solid in coverage situations due to good pedaling and hips. Able to cover grass, has the speed to cover sideline to sideline as needed.

Sam will be attending LSU for his seventh year of college football. Previously having played with McNeese State, Marshall, and Tulane, Sam has more experience playing at the DI level than nearly any other player, making him a great asset to LSU. His maturity and his already developed skills will make him a great leader and depth player at the safety position, likely becoming second on the depth chart for the Tigers.

Marshall DB Andre Sam commits to LSU!

Landen King – TE

2022 Team: Auburn

2023 Team: Utah

Good frame, standing at 6’5” but on the lighter side for a TE at 220 lbs. Although listed at TE, he transitioned to wide receiver during his time at Auburn. Given his thinner size and good long speed, the receiver position suits his abilities better. Shows a very good release off of the line of scrimmage to create initial separation from the defender. Good COD and footwork when breaking out of the stem of his routes. His height enables him to win vertically, and displays good body control to adjust to the flight of the ball as needed.

King was very underused at Auburn in his one season of playing – he only appeared in three games and made one catch. However, his ceiling is quite high, and he has a lot of upside. King does not have enough strength in his legs to anchor in the trenches as a blocking tight end, but as a receiver he has a lot of potential. His natural athleticism and speed make him a great talent already, but his pass catching abilities and short area quickness make him a true threat who can exploit the defense in man coverage situations. I expect Utah to use King early and often next season as he adds great height at the receiver position, and will continue to improve as he sees more action.

OH, WHAT A GRAB.
