Top 5 Under-the-Radar Transfer Portal Additions in the SEC

The last couple of months have been extremely hectic in the transfer portal, so a few commitments slid under the radar. Here are the top five in the SEC.

DB Duce Chestnut – LSU (Syracuse)

The skinny: With the number of transfers that LSU has added, it is understandable that a few may have not received the level of attention that they deserved. One of these is Chestnut, who in two seasons at Syracuse totaled 83 tackles, five tackles for a loss, four interceptions and nine pass breakups. He is out this spring with an injury but is fully expected to compete for a starting spot in pre-season camp.

OL Dillon Wade – Auburn (Tulsa)

The skinny: Upon his arrival, new head coach Hugh Freeze knew that he had to revamp the offensive line. He has done so by adding several interesting pieces through the portal, including Wade, who looks likely to start at tackle this fall. Fellow transfer Gunner Britton (Western Kentucky) may very well start at the other tackle spot, but the current thought is that Wade is the one who will make a more powerful immediate impact.

TE McCallan Castles – Tennessee (Cal-Davis)

The skinny: Tennessee needed to find some depth at the tight end position and did so by adding Castles. At 6-foot-5 and 235-pounds, he is a capable blocker who is more known as a receiver. Having totaled 57 receptions for 734 yards and six touchdowns during the last two seasons at the FCS-level, Castles has NFL potential and one remaining season of eligibility to prove it.

WR Tre Harris – Ole Miss (Louisiana Tech)

The skinny: While Ole Miss returns some talent at the position, there will also be an opportunity for an incoming transfer or two to make an impact. One of these is Harris, who during the last two seasons at Louisiana Tech totaled 105 receptions for 1,497 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was especially productive during the 2022 season, with 10 touchdown receptions, which could prove vital since the Rebels’ top two receivers, who are no longer on the team, totaled the same amount between them last season.

OL Marques Cox – Kentucky (Northern Illinois)

The skinny: The offensive line was a serious ongoing concern for the Wildcats during the 2022 season. Adding Cox is one way that Kentucky hopes to make the position stronger this fall. While he missed a majority of last season at Northern Illinois due to a foot injury, he did start 33 games with the Huskies and is already projected to be the starting left tackle in Lexington this season.
