Five teams with surprisingly slow starts to high school recruiting so far in 2025….

1. Arizona

— Coaching changes can always slow things down, but only one commitment so far? Arizona State is making them look bad.

Arizona’s new football head coach Brent Brennan, in an introductory press conference in McKale Center on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Brennan is coming to the UA from San Jose State University and will be the 31st head coach for the Wildcats.

2. Kansas State

— I don’t worry about Chris Klieman, as he’s a great coach and player developer, but with a small portal class and a slow start in high school recruiting, things need to pick up a bit.

3. NC State

— Like Klieman, I don’t worry about Dave Doeren, but you’d like to see a few more names here. He got his QB in Will Wilson, but some in-state wins are needed soon.

4. Michigan State

— Jonathan Smith is a good coach, and he’s hit the portal hard, but high school recruiting will be crucial for him as he’s a fish out of water in the Midwest. The start hasn’t been stellar. Hometown RB Jace Clarizio was a nice addition this week, but there’s still a long way to go.

Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith speaks during an introductory press conference on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.

5. Arkansas

— Sam Pittman is under fire, and Bobby Petrino has been brought in to save the day, but they have only five commits, with one being a kicker, and that’s alarming.

Nov 24, 2023; Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA; Arkansas Razorbacks head coach Sam Pittman during the fourth quarter against the Missouri Tigers at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Missouri won 48-14.
