Who is Kaleb Spencer?

The Sooners landed their first commitment in a couple of months with the pledge from 2023 DB Kaleb Spencer. The 3-star prospect is a 6'3 safety/linebacker hybrid that college football defenses have been employing with much success. Kaleb committed to the Sooners over the likes of Tennessee, Kentucky, LSU, Arkansas, Penn State, and others. He goes to Life Christian Academy in Colonial Heights, Va.

How soon is he expected to contribute?

Oklahoma has begun to recruit defensive a bit differently under new head coach Brent Venables. But in terms of size and athleticism, Oklahoma does have a few guys on their roster who would be ahead of him, at least in theory. To begin with, they have Robert Spears-Jennings, a top-150 kid from Tulsa in the 2022 class., not to mention Jaren Kanak, a member of the same recruiting class. Oklahoma has him playing their Cheetah position, which is a hybrid linebacker and safety role. Similar to nickel back, but a bit more complicated. He could with a great spring contribute early, but the learning curve for the position is supposed to be tough, so a redshirt is likely.

Player Comp

Kaleb Spencer is being brought in to be Oklahoma's version of Isaiah Simmons. The betting man should take the under here, but there are several traits and similarities in their games. Kaleb is a slender, versatile player who can rush the passer, defend the pass like a safety, and has sideline-to-sideline speed you are looking for. Just like Simmons, Spencer is raw coming out of high school but has attracted the attention of several top-notch programs. Very likely this young man becomes a 4-star prospect before the end of the cycle.

What does this mean for the Sooners?

The Roof, the Roof! The Roof is on fire! There was some skepticism among the fanbase when Ted Roof was announced as the Oklahoma defensive coordinator however the very veteran DC has done a great job for OU so far. This is another feather in the cap of the Ted, who was pivotal for Oklahoma in the transfer portal, as well as closing out recruits in the 2022 cycle.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
