Mind of Mike: Lambos at Texas are OK

Following an Official Visit weekend with many Lamborghinis at Texas, should this be seen as a problem?

Lamborghinis at recruiting visits? What has college football become? Is this good or bad? To me it’s honestly not a big deal.

Texas hosted a bunch of elite recruits and had Lamborghinis lined up as the players walked towards the facilities. Staffers revved the engines and everyone freaked as the video his social media…

How did we go from coaches being fired over tattoos and Todd Gurley being suspended for signing autographs to this extreme NIL world we live in now? Well first, let’s not overreact. Every player isn’t getting a Lamborghini, these are simply props. Are there ridiculous NIL deals being cooked up for these recruits and others? Sure. Are many of them dumb and a waste of money? Yep. Just ask Billy Napier about Jaden Rashada. But those saying kids are in it for the money are ignorant. Why? It’s simple.

Take your job. You get paid to do it right? You wouldn’t do it for free right? So why should players? And to continue my point, you get paid but would like to make more right? Of course. So even though you make a certain amount, you’re striving for more. That’s the same with college players who aspire to big paydays in the NFL. If you’re happy with your current salary, then you’ll be an average employee and likely won’t succeed. And that’s the same for college football players. If all they want is a fancy car or some money in college, they won’t have what it takes for the NFL.

Is a line of Lamborghinis kinda foolish? Yep. But this is just a steroids version of the previous props we’ve seen over the years on recruiting visits and doesn’t mean this of any group of recruits will lose their drive because of a fast car.

I see coaches and media members out there, many of them dinosaurs like myself, saying this is an example of what’s wrong with college football. That this is why Nick Saban retired. And to an extent I agree. NIL needs to be capped like NFL salaries and more booster activity in college football is never good. But if we think the recruiting staff at Texas was dumb and tone-deaf for lining up Lambos we are simply overreacting. Enticements have always been part of college football recruiting and if you aren’t trying then you’re failing. Let’s just chill about this one.
