In today’s Fact or Fiction — Recruiting Edition — I look at three big recent topics from the recruiting trail and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Mabrey Mettauer can be like Drake Maye.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Why would I say this? Because I think Mettauer was headed to UNC before Phil Longo took the job at Wisconsin, and now the Texas standout QB is committed to the Badgers. When I first saw Mettauer I immediately thought of Trevor Lawrence although not to the same talent level. And when I first saw Maye I thought of Lawrence as well. Maye has blossomed under Longo to resemble Lawrence and Mettauer can do the same.

The Woodlands quarterback Mabrey Mettauer throws a pass during the first half of a Region II-6A Division I area high school football playoff game against Klein Cain, Friday, Nov. 18, 2022, in The Woodlands.

2. Pitt WR recruiting is taking the next step.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Remember when Pitt was of early interest to WR Hykeem Williams and some other big names in the 2023 class. Well, they struck out there, but now with 2024 WR DayDay Farmer as an early commitment the hard work has paid off. Tiguan Underwood had a tough role replacing Brennan Marion as he developed Jordan Addison and all. And the Pitt offense wasn’t selling itself this past cycle. But I’ve always said that if you get a few top players at a position to consider you, more will take a longer look. That’s what we have here with Farmer and some great momentum for Pitt.

Florida High tackles Cocoa wide receiver Dayday Farmer (7) as the Seminoles face the Tigers in the 2022 2S state championship at Gene Cox Stadium on Friday, Dec. 9, 2022 in Tallahassee, Fla.

3. NIL is holding up DB Cormani McClain.

Farrell’s take: FACT

First, it was academic rumors, and then it was Deion Sanders at Colorado. But I’ve been told this comes down to NIL. McClain was set to commit to Florida during the season but shocked everyone when he committed to Miami. And there were many reasons aside from NIL he picked Miami but let’s be honest — this last-second change of heart had a lot to do with money. And McClain was set to get a nice deal. So what happened? Not sure, but if it is NIL, it will be worked out and he will stay with Miami. But for now, he’s up in the air.

Cormani McClain (7) of Lakeland breaks up a pass intended for Kenyon Sears (1) of Venice in first half of the Class 4S state championship game at DRV PNK Stadium, Saturday, Dec. 17, 2022 in Fort Lauderdale.
