Recruiting Round-Up 8/6-8/8/22 The USC Surge!
In today's edition of recruiting round-up, we take a look at the recent trend of USC recruiting! USC is currently just outside the top 10 in the 247sports composite in recruiting rankings, and the surge is due to some big hitters choosing USC. The thing is many of them aren't even from California. One of the biggest reasons USC was a machine under Carrol is they would not only keep the kids they wanted at home but could go elsewhere and pick up players across the nation. Riley has taken top-notch players from Louisiana and Texas in recent weeks, and the trend is not likely to slow down soon. While we discussed what his successor at Oklahoma is doing and how it surpassed in many ways what Riley accomplished there, it appears Riley is turning USC back into a recruiting juggernaut.
Four-Star RB Parker Jenkins Commits to Houston
Parker Jenkins is a 5-foot 10-inch running back from Houston, Texas. He is an explosive player maker with legitimate track speed, who also runs track for Klein Forest High school. Speed isn't Jenkins only trick as he is proven as an interior runner as well, in tough Texas high school competition. He is shifty in the open field, and is a proven player as a slot receiver and punt returner. Jenkins is a versatile guy who should be featured early and often for the Cougars come 2023.
Four-Star RB Dylan Edwards Commits to Notre Dame
Dylan Edwards checks in at 5-foot 9-inches and 165 pounds from Derby, Kansas. This kid is speedy, but also dynamic as he is tough to take down on first contact. Edwards had originally committed to Kansas State but chose to back off that commitment after a big-time performance at the future 50. Afterward, it seemed inevitable that Notre Dame would land his commitment. He showed out lining up at wide receiver and returning punts as well en route to the 2021 Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year title.
Four-Star Edge Braylan Shelby Commits to USC
Shelby checks in at 6-foot 5-inches and 240 pounds. Perfectly fits the mold for an edge player in USC defensive coordinator Alex Grinch's system. Braylan is a dynamic athlete who placed in the triple jump, but also was named 1st team all Texas 5A at OLB. He is a lengthy and rangy athlete who has a very good bend and other athletic traits. Fits the physical mold of a Nik Bonitto-type player and was a big get being a highly sought-after recruit. Will likely be able to contribute right away from a body standpoint at USC.
Five-Star WR Shelton Sampson jr Commits to LSU
Shelton Sampson checks in at 6-foot 4-inches and 180 pounds. He goes to Catholic High school, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He has been a major contributor for a program that has won state and been there an additional time in the last two seasons. He has great length and has shown the ability to go up and get the ball in traffic. His game is not all about the red zone and being a big target, the young WR is quick and does a lot in the short game as well, and is dynamic with the ball in his hands. If he can put on a bit of weight could be a factor for Brian Kelly's squad quickly.
Four-Star LB Arvell Reese Commits to Ohio State
Reese checks in at 6-foot 4-inches and 212 pounds from Cleveland, Ohio. This young man can end up as an edge rusher or stand-up linebacker and has the traits you look for in either. He has room to add plenty of weight onto his frame and shows athletic promise as a coverage linebacker. Arvell stands out on tape as he is all over, and punishes the offensive players he brings down. Everyone needs to calm down about Ohio State recruiting, they always rebound and did so nicely here.
