We’ll keep the scouting reports rolling on top prospects from across the country.

Aydin Breland – DL

Santa Ana, CA (Mater Dei High School)

Top DL prospect who has attracted offers from the likes of Auburn, LSU, and Michigan along with 22 other schools. Breland has very good height with a muscular, built frame with room to improve. Very good play strength, good explosiveness, and solid speed to track down most QBs at the high school level. He’s a very strong kid who can bull rush his way into the backfield without the need of a counter move, although he has a mean swim move and single hand swipe in his arsenal. Good ability to strike his hands into the chest of similar sized OL forcefully gives him the leverage he needs to move his opposition 3-5 yards into the backfield before he engages the QB. His very good strength, good leverage and solid pursuit angles make him good vs zone runs, but his ability to overpower his one-on-one matchups make him even better against gap runs. Good motor and shows a tendency to invite contact even when the play has moved past him.

His adequate ability to get from his 3-point stance into a pass rushing position makes it hard for Breland to be as effective in the passing game as his athleticism should suggest. His hips are stiff, preventing him from being able to get low and create leverage on smaller blockers. Overall, he’s a solid 3-5 tech who possesses the strength to be a force in the run game. He’ll be best used as a gap filler on the strong side of a power 5 defensive line with the upside to be an all-conference interior DL.

Jason Brown – RB

Seattle, WA (O’Dea High School)

The #3 running back in his class and the top prospect out of Washington. Adequate height and weight but plays into every bit of his frame. Elite vision as a runner, as he’s able to find holes before they develop and look 1-2 levels ahead into the defense to decide his best plan of action. He hits gaps with good power and elite bursts of acceleration in tight spaces. Capable of running both between the tackles and when taking the run outside, he shows the balance to walk a tightrope on the sideline. Shows good elusiveness using his quick footwork and body language in the open field to make defenders bite one way. Very good strength allows him to push through arm tackles and fall forward when lowering his shoulder against bigger defenders. Displays solid toughness and is a willing blocker.

Displays adequate hands and route-running ability out of the backfield. He has an adequate sixth gear, which is disappointing considering how fast he can get from 0-60. As a pure runner, this kid is a special talent. He will have a hard time getting involved in the passing game but can be a solid contributor to any school who’s looking for a hard-nosed, quick back who can make something out of nothing. He would be a solid addition to any power 5 school RB room, though he doesn’t impact the passing game enough to be a three down back right away.

The Best Way to End the Scheduling Debate

Josh Joyner – RB

Oxnard, CA (Pacifica High School)

An RB who had a lot of Group of 5 attention during the season, but whose traction has slowed down since. Joyner has adequate height and a slim frame with broad enough shoulders to add considerable weight. Very good explosiveness and an elite sixth gear to hit those long runs. He showcases good vision, able to bounce the run to the outside when needed and use the top-level speed of his to beat defenders to the sideline. His change of direction is among the best in his class, stopping on a dime routinely and using pure directional changes to make up most of his evaded tackles. Joyner utilizes the juke move to perfection with great head-movement and misdirection, making him great in the open field. He’s a good route runner whose twitch translates to his route tree.

His occasional concentration drops take away from his ability to be a true three down back right now. Smaller build holds him to only adequate run strength. His competitive toughness is adequate at best, he makes little to no impact on plays that don’t feature the ball in his hands. He shows no willingness to block either in the backfield or when lined up in the slot. As a runner, this kid will make a huge difference at the next level. He needs to add some weight to his frame to avoid injury through the 2-3 downs of workload he’s sure to get at the group of 5 level.

Ca’lil Valentine – RB

Chandler, AZ (Chandler)

4-star RB who picked up a lot of Power 5 attention this spring. Valentine has good height and a slender frame with elite explosiveness, very good top end speed, and good run strength. Good vision as he’s able to find holes before they develop and accelerate through them quickly. He possesses elite change of direction with the ability to stop on a dime and accelerate to a new area of the field. Whether it’s in a gap or in the middle of the field, Valentine showcases very good balance and elusiveness to make defenders miss with either a spin, juke, or cutback. Shows good hands, rarely taking his eyes off the ball until he has secured the catch. His ability to evade defenders in the backfield and turn runs into 15+ yard plays make him fun to watch. His route running skills are solid, he doesn’t run much other than screens, flats, and streaks. Tough and willing blocker. Fights/reaches for extra yards only when the goal line or first down marker is close.

This kid has the burst and change of direction to be an elite back at the next level. He’s best when running outside the tackles and operating in open space. When he puts on more weight and develops more as a route runner, he’ll be an elite three down back at the D1 level by his second or third year. Can definitely be an immediate impact player in an RB committee type workload early on in his college career.
