Where Could the Best Available Transfer QBs Land?

Cory Lemer goes in-depth on the best available transfer QB’s in the transfer portal, and where they may end up.

The transfer portal has changed the game of college football. Players can follow their coaches to new schools or leave for more playing time and a better chance to make the NFL. Many players enter their names in the “portal” late in the season to ensure they are at the top of boards for many colleges. Today we will look at five QBs who have yet to find a home and where they can end up next season.

1. Spencer Sanders QB Oklahoma State

Oct 1, 2022; Waco, Texas, USA; Oklahoma State Cowboys quarterback Spencer Sanders (3) runs for a first down against the Baylor Bears during the first quarter at McLane Stadium.

First up is former Oklahoma State star Spencer Sanders. Sanders was a four-year starter at Oklahoma State, throwing over nine thousand yards and 60 touchdowns. Many believe Sanders and members of the WR room left due to Coach Dunn not being fired. One team looking at Sanders is Auburn. Head coach Hugh Freeze and the Tigers have a below-average starter in Robby Ashford, and adding a trusted starter would be a massive get for Auburn. Ole Miss is another team pushing for Sanders, but the Rebels have an incumbent starter, Jaxson Dart. Due to this, I expect Sanders to transfer to Auburn.

2. Brennan Armstrong QB Virginia

Oct 1, 2022; Durham, North Carolina, USA; Virginia Cavaliers quarterback Brennan Armstrong (5) runs the ball against the Duke Blue Devils during the second half at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Brennan Armstrong is next on the list. The former Virginia star had one of his best years last season, tossing 31 touchdowns and passing for over four-thousand yards. This season was unfortunately different. With the addition of Coach Elliott and his staff, Armstrong saw his production rapidly decrease, leading him to add his name to the transfer portal. With Devin Leary leaving for Kentucky after having success with the Wolfpack, it makes sense Brennan becomes NC State’s next star.

3. Hank Bachmeier QB Boise State

Boise State Senior Hank Bachmeier entered the portal in late September after losing the starting job after four games. Hank had a stellar 2021 season as the Bronco’s signal caller, throwing over three-thousand yards and 20 touchdowns. Bachmeier struggled to find similar success this year. Hank has two years of eligibility and will be a great addition to a competing offense. I believe Hank stays in the Mountain West and returns to his home state. San Diego State has been a solid team in the MWC for years and can compete, and Hank would stay home and still be in the same conference and compete. Obviously, it is early, and Hank will garnish interest from more schools, but the Aztecs are my early pick to land the veteran QB.

4. Malik Hornsby QB Arkansas

Nov 12, 2022; Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA; Arkansas Razorbacks quarterback Malik Hornsby rushes in the first quarter against the LSU Tigers at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

Malik Hornsby briefly entered the portal last year but returned to Arkansas for his RS Sophomore year. With Star QB KJ Jefferson at the helm, Malik rarely saw playing time, leading him to enter the portal again this year. Due to his dual-threat ability, many schools are chasing the former four-star, but it seems schools like Missouri and Baylor are at the top of the list for the touted signal caller.

Only six Top-30 transfer QBs are still available, per 247:

7. Brennan Armstrong, Virginia
13. Malik Hornsby, Arkansas
16. Spencer Sanders, Oklahoma State
21. Hank Bachmeier, Boise State
29. Sawyer Robertson, Mississippi St
30. Jay Butterfield, Oregon

5. Mike Wright QB Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt football had an impressive year this year, and one of those reasons was QB play. Mike Wright and AJ Swann were consistent all year, leading to an impressive 5-7 season. Wright managed to throw 12 touchdowns and 974 yards. Wright was a three-star out of Atlanta in the 2020 class, and while little is known about his favorites since entering the portal, I believe he heads home, where a school like Georgia Tech is a perfect fit. With a new coach and system, Wright is able to get a fresh start and lead a more talented team while staying close to home.
