We’re officially 153 days away from the start of the 2025 season, and the schedule is packed with explosive matchups featuring elite quarterbacks and high-powered offenses. Here’s a breakdown of my favorite early-season showdowns, along with a few predictions.

Game of the Week: Texas vs. Ohio State

Jan 20, 2025; Atlanta, GA, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day is interviewed after winning against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the CFP National Championship college football game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

It’s rematch of last season’s Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic Semifinal, where Ohio State secured a 28-14 victory. The defining moment? Jack Sawyer’s 83-yard scoop-and-score that sealed the game. Now, the question looms—can Texas get revenge?

Key Storylines:

• Arch Manning vs. Caleb Downs & Co. – Can Manning handle Ohio State’s defensive pressure, especially with Matt Patricia now calling the shots as defensive coordinator?

• New Faces in Key Roles – Brian Hartline has taken over as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator. How will his scheme impact the Buckeyes’ passing attack?

The Best Way to End the Scheduling Debate

• Battle in the Trenches – Ohio State’s elite receiving corps faces off against a Texas secondary with a fresh QB under center. Meanwhile, which team will control the ground game?

Prediction:

Ohio State 30, Texas 21 – The Buckeyes’ defense makes just enough plays to hold off a dangerous Texas offense.

LSU vs. Clemson

Nov 2, 2024; Clemson, South Carolina, USA; Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney reacts during the fourth quarter against the Louisville Cardinals at Memorial Stadium.

Who’s the real Death Valley? This showdown features one of the season’s best quarterback matchups, as Garrett Nussmeier and Cade Klubnik—both Heisman contenders—lead their teams into battle.

Key Storylines:

• Offensive Shootout? – The team that executes best on offense coud take this one. Can LSU’s defense step up and make a difference?

• LSU’s Ground Game – Can the Tigers establish a reliable rushing attack to balance their offense?

• Klubnik’s Consistency – Will he come out firing and sustain that momentum from Week 1 onward?

• LSU’s Season Opener Woes – Can LSU snap its streak of season-opening losses in a hostile environment?

Prediction:

Clemson 21, LSU 17 – Klubnik delivers in crunch time, and Clemson’s defense makes just enough stops to defend its Death Valley turf.

South Carolina vs. Virginia Tech

Dec 31, 2024; Orlando, FL, USA; South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer reacts to the Illinois Fighting Illini in the third quarter at Camping World Stadium.

A matchup packed with emotion, as Shane Beamer faces off against the program where his father, Frank Beamer, once built a lasting legacy.

Key Storylines:

• Dual-Threat Battle – LaNorris Sellers vs. Kyron Drones—two dynamic quarterbacks who can make plays with both their arms and legs.

• Beamer vs. Beamer’s Legacy – Can Shane lead the Gamecocks to a statement win against his father’s former program?

• Defensive Edge – Which defense will step up to contain these mobile quarterbacks?

Prediction:

South Carolina 30, Virginia Tech 17 – The Gamecocks’ offense proves too much, and Shane Beamer earns a meaningful win.

Tennessee vs. Syracuse

Nov 30, 2024; Nashville, Tennessee, USA; Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Nico Iamaleava (8) passes the ball against the Vanderbilt Commodores during the first half at FirstBank Stadium.

This matchup features two coaches who know how to build winning programs—Fran Brown at Syracuse and Josh Heupel at Tennessee. Brown, one of the most exciting young coaches in college football, has quickly become a name to watch.

Key Storylines:

• Who Will Be QB1 for Syracuse? – The Orange enter the season with uncertainty under center. Can they find stability at the position before facing Tennessee’s explosive offense?

• The Nico Iamaleava Leap – After a full offseason as QB1, how much has Nico Iamaleava improved? His development could determine just how dangerous Tennessee’s offense can be.

Prediction:

Tennessee 30, Syracuse 21 – The Vols’ offensive firepower proves too much, and Iamaleava delivers a strong season-opening performance.

Notre Dame vs. Miami

Notre Dame safety Xavier Watts (0) celebrates getting an interception during a NCAA college football game against Virginia at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, in South Bend.

A classic matchup between two storied programs, both led by notable coaches and featuring fresh faces at quarterback. This game serves as an early test for two teams with legit playoff aspirations.

Key Storylines:

• Playoff Implications – An early-season win could build momentum for a potential postseason run.

• Carson Beck Takes Over at Miami – How will the former Georgia QB handle his new role leading the Hurricanes?

• Who’s QB1 for Notre Dame? – The Irish enter the season with questions under center. Who emerges as the leader?

• Battle in the Trenches – Which offensive and defensive line will set the tone?

Prediction:

Notre Dame 30, Miami 20 – The Irish control the line of scrimmage and make enough key plays to take home the win.

Final Thoughts

With so many exciting matchups kicking off the season, these are the ones that really stand out the most to me. The storylines, the quarterback battles, and the playoff implications make for an electric opening weekend. Buckle up—this is going to be a fun ride!
