Since taking the Boston College head coaching job, Bill O’Brien has worked hard in the transfer portal. The program’s fans eagerly await the 2024 on-field product.

Final piece of the roster

On Tuesday, the Eagles completed the final piece of their roster with Ohio State transfer defensive back Cameron Martinez stepping onto campus and officially joining the team. Despite missing spring practices, Martinez, a former four-star recruit initially recruited by Jeff Hafley to Ohio State, is poised to significantly impact the upcoming season, adding a new level of excitement to the team.

Martinez committed to Boston College in December while Jeff Hafley was the head coach. Hafley left BC in January for the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator job.

How he fits on the team

Regarding his role, Martinez could be a crucial addition to the safety position, that has seen several new faces this year. Sophomore KP Price and converted cornerback Jalen Cheek both received significant playing time with the first team this spring, while Cole Batson missed most of the spring and the spring game due to an injury. Additionally, Bugg Jones was featured with the first team during the spring as well. Martinez should bring competition and experienced depth to the position, which will be critical during the college football season.

Before Boston College

During the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Martinez played as a freshman at Ohio State. He appeared on special teams in two of Ohio State’s nine games, including the national championship against Alabama. In his redshirt freshman year, Martinez had an increased role, participating in nine games at safety, making 13 total tackles, defending four passes, and achieving his first career interception, which he returned for a touchdown. He also recorded half a tackle for a loss. In the current season, Martinez had limited game action, playing in just four games and recording two total tackles.

Before the 2023 season, Martinez had played 25 games with the Buckeyes. This past season, Martinez played in three games and recorded two tackles.
