The Daily Deion: Reassessing Prime’s Coaching Job

Mike Farrell reevaluates Deion Sanders’ coaching job after an ugly loss against Stanford.

The best thing for college football? Deion Sanders. But some think he’s the worst thing as well. Here’s your dose of Daily Deion.

Disclaimer: I have always been a fan of Deion Sanders. Loved him as a player at FSU, in Atlanta and Dallas and even respected him as a 49er against my Cowboys.

I was about to do it. I was about to put Deion at the top of the best coaching jobs for the 2023 season. After all, I thought Colorado was going to move to 5-2 with an easy win over Stanford after I thought they’d struggle to win three or four games all season. Heck, I almost began writing my top 10 article at halftime Friday night when the Buffs were up 29-0. And then we all saw what happened. Stanford came back, Deion and his staff made zero adjustments of any impact and WR Elic Ayomanor had 13 catches for 294 yards and three scores looking like Randy Moss. At the very least you’d think Deion, arguably the best defensive back to ever play, would have been able to make some adjustments in the secondary to slow down the Stanford offense. But as the head coach he should have done something to avoid a historic blown lead. And he honestly looked lost.

Top 10 head coaching performances don’t include blown leads against a team that lost outright to FCS Sacramento State. This loss was an embarrassment despite the low expectations I put on this team and I’m not sure if I can include Deion in the top 10 at all now. This was glaringly bad.

The weaknesses on this team are clear as they were loaded with skill talent and speed but lacked talent and depth in the trenches. But in this game elite skill player Travis Hunter got torched numerous times and it’s clear to everyone but Deion that he’s playing too much each game as a two-way player. More on that soon. As confident as Deion looked in the first half, as his team was dominating on both sides of the ball, he looked as clueless in the second half and overtime (don’t get me started on the coin toss choice in OT even though it didn’t hurt them) and seemed to do much of nothing as the lead evaporated. It’s not a great look.

Boulder, Colorado, USA; Stanford Cardinal wide receiver Elic Ayomanor (13) pulls in a touchdown behind the pack of Colorado Buffaloes cornerback Travis Hunter (12) in overtime at Folsom Field.
