Fact or Fiction: Kayshon Boutte, Texas Tech’s Future, Lane Kiffin Trending Down

In Mike Farrell’s Fact or Fiction, he determines whether Kayshon Boutte should have declared for the draft…

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Kayshon Boutte should enter the NFL Draft.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

I thought Boutte was making a smart decision to return to college. Jayden Daniels is back, so off-and-on chemistry could be worked on and he could be part of a solid offense. And let’s face it, his NFL stock has plummeted after a very poor season by his standards. Boutte had only two touchdowns this last season with 48 catches coming off 2020 and 2021 seasons where his average yards-per-catch was much higher and he scored 5 and 9 touchdown’s respectively. He was expected to have in the area of 80 catches for over 1,000 yards and double digit touchdowns and he fell well short. I know not everyone agrees with me on this one, but he needed to come back.

2. Texas Tech will be a problem next season.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Joey McGuire went 8-5 his first season in Lubbock with a win over Ole Miss in the TaxAct Texas Bowl. But the first year Texas Tech coach was overshadowed by another first year coach in Sonny Dykes at TCU who is in the college football playoff. But don’t sleep on McGuire who has recruiting going well, is savvy in the portal and has a knack for getting the most out of his players. While everyone focuses on Texas, Oklahoma and the rest next season in the Big 12 he could surprise them all. It would be dumb to write that Texas Tech could surprise like TCU did. After all, Lubbock isn’t the Dallas/Fort Worth area and McGuire didn’t inherit a team like Dykes did with NFL talent at many positions. But trust me, the Red Raiders are going to be a major problem next season in the Big 12.

3. Lane Kiffin is trending down.

Farrell’s take: FACT

I love Kiffin. He’s great for the sport and is a tremendous offensive mind. But what the hell? Ole Miss finished 8-5 this season, lost 5 of their last six games and had a bad 2023 recruiting year. All the Auburn fuss and constant rumors of Kiffin leaving Ole Miss are for what? He needs a strong bounceback season next year or people will begin to wonder why he got a massive extension and even super agent Jimmy Sexton won’t be able to market him if another flop down the stretch occurs.

Oct 8, 2022; Nashville, Tennessee, USA; Mississippi Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin and other coaches celebrate after a recovered fumble against the Vanderbilt Commodores during the second half at FirstBank Stadium.
