Fact or Fiction: America’s Team, Dan Lanning on the Move, Deion’s Next Stop

Mike Farrell analyzes whether Michigan, Notre Dame, or someone else is truly “America’s Team”…

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Notre Dame is college football’s “America’s Team”.

Farrell’s take: FACT

It’s not Michigan because “America’s Team” is loved or hated based on hype and popularity, as the Dallas Cowboys were when they gained that fame. Michigan cheated. Notre Dame is that program everyone hates or loves with no middle ground, and it’s been that way forever.

2. Dan Lanning is telling the truth.

Farrell’s take: FACT

The Oregon coach said there’s zero chance he’s leaving for the Texas A&M job (that’s the rumored one), and I believe him. Alabama may be a different story down the line, but with Oregon moving to the Big Ten and the way he has things rolling there, he’d be foolish to uproot his family for a job no one has been successful at.

Oregon coach Dan Lanning leads his team onto the field before the game against Colorado in Eugene Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023.

3. Deion would leave for a better job after this second.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Nope not gonna happen even if a team like Texas A&M came after him with a ton of money. Why? His sons are at Colorado, and they can’t transfer twice unless they do so as grad students. And while I’m unaware of their academic standing, I’m not sure they are walking with diplomas this summer. Of course, the NCAA could always allow a second transfer for such circumstances, but that falls well short of the “hardship” requirement. Deion will leave Colorado, but it will be after the 2024 season.
