Fact or Fiction: Big 12 Supremacy, Hoosiers Are for Real, Boise Primed for Deep Run

Is Big 12 supremacy real, are the Hoosiers legit, and is Boise primed for a run?

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION

1. The Big 12 is the most fun conference in CFB

My take: FACT

Now, I didn’t say the Big 12 is the best conference in football, but it sure is fun to watch. Seven weeks into the season, three Big 12 teams are ranked, including two in the top 15. Not included in the rankings are Colorado, Utah, and Texas Tech. Iowa State could be a serious contender for the playoffs, while BYU just continues to win. The best team in the Big 12 might just be the Kansas State Wildcats, led by Avery Johnson. I can sleep peacefully at night knowing we will get to see at least one Big 12 team in the playoffs this season.

2. The Indiana Hoosiers are for real

My Take: FACT

Curt Cignetti came to Indiana from JMU this past offseason, and nobody is really talking about what he has done with the program so far. Indiana is 6-0 for the first time since 1967, and the team is back in the rankings in 2021. QB Kurtis Rourke has solidified himself as one of the best quarterbacks in college football and could easily be a contender for the Heisman Trophy. The IU offense is the best it’s been since Michael Penix was there, as they put up 41 points in their last game against Northwestern. Indiana plays Nebraska at home this Saturday in front of a sold-out crowd, and trust me, Rourke vs. Raiola will be must-see TV.

3. Boise State is primed for a playoff run

My Take: FICTION

How can you talk about college football in 2024 without mentioning Boise State and Ashton Jeanty? Boise is 5-1, with their only loss coming against Oregon, and Jeanty is easily the Heisman favorite through seven weeks. With the new playoff format, Boise State is likely to make the CFP if they continue at their current pace, but it is hard to see them making any noise. Boise will always have a chance with Jeanty running the ball, but I’ll need to see them against tougher competition to be convinced they can compete with the top dogs. Boise has a bye week this weekend but will face their toughest test on October 25 as they go on the road against UNLV, who is also 5-1.
