Mind of Mike: Who’s Hated More, Arch Manning or Shedeur Sanders?

Arch and Shedeur are polar opposites who come from similar backgrounds, but which future NFL passer is hated more?

Who’s hated more, Shedeur Sanders or Arch Manning? That’s a question that came into my head over the last week for a few reasons.

While we’ve written quite a bit about Sanders from his FBS debut season last year which had everything from great stats to sacks to flashing watches. Meanwhile, Manning sat the bench at Texas last year and looks to do the same this year despite a really impressive Spring Game. But even with one playing and one not, the hatred for both seems equal.

People hate Sanders because they feel he’s a pampered athlete who has had all the advantages of being the son of a legend. He got his flash and arrogance from Deion Sanders and many feel he didn’t have to work too hard to get where he is. After all, his pops was his high school coach, then his head coach at FCS Jackson State, and now his head coach at Colorado. Needless to say, he’s never had to earn the starting job.

Between being essentially handed the QB job and the attention he gets from Deion’s loyal and sometimes cult-like fan base, everything he does is great. So obviously those who aren’t fans of Coach Prime or Colorado can’t stand the attention he gets.

Manning is also pampered in the minds of most. The son of Cooper, nephew of NFL greats Peyton and Eli, and grandchild of NFL legend Archie Manning has been a big name for years. Despite awful high school competition in Louisiana, he was ranked No. 1 in the country by most (No. 2 by ESPN) while being No. 8 on my QB list in the 2023 class. Not No. 8 overall but No. 8 at QB. So after being third string last season at Texas and deciding to stay and be the backup to Quinn Ewers this year while most QBs portal out, his competitive nature now gets questioned.

Simply put, Sanders and Manning can’t win. Both were born into families of fame and fortune, they have been hated on since youth football and it has only gotten worse. But who’s hated more? That’s a tough one, but I’ll land on Manning. At least at Colorado, Sanders shares the brunt of people’s ire with his dad who is the head honcho. At Texas, Manning is alone and it seems any story or post about him draws negativity without even a mention of his uncles. People just don’t want Manning to succeed. Maybe because they are tired of great Manning QBs, or because he’s affluent and not doing things the same as others by demanding a starting role or leaving when he can’t earn one.

It’s kind of fascinating. As quiet as Manning is and as brash as Sanders is, I find more hate for Manning talk. The quieter he is, the more people hate.

Either way, both will play in the NFL, something almost any hater can’t say, and both with be set for life financially. They will get the last laugh overall, but with it will come an avalanche of negativity. I guess that comes with a famous last name.
