Recruiting Fact or Fiction: Malik Elzy, Julian Sayin, Roderick Kearney

In Mike Farrell’s Fact or Fiction – recruiting edition – he looks at if Malik Elzy will end up at Illinois, if Julian Sayin…

In today’s Fact or Fiction— Recruiting Edition — I look at three big recent topics in football recruiting and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. WR Malik Elzy lands at Illinois.

Farrell’s take: FACT

He’s a local kid and now that he’s no longer committed to Cincinnati I think he’s a lock for the Illini. He wants to take visits to UGA, Tennessee and perhaps others and who knows if that will or won’t happen but let’s be clear — his decommitment was because of how much he loves Illinois.

Simeon WR Malik Elzy (8) runs the ball against Kenwood.

2. Alabama has the edge now for Julian Sayin.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Nick Saban is still the GOAT and Sayin, a 5-star QB from California, took a visit to Alabama this past weekend and loved it. LSU has been very involved and I still think UGA is very much in the mix here despite taking 2024 QB Ryan Puglisi. The Dawgs want two QBs in 2024 and had been a leader for Sayin but Alabama has now stepped to the front with LSU. I expect the Tide to win this one in the end.

3. OL Roderick Kearney’s flip is a sign of things to come.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

It’s rare for Alex Atkins to lose an OL commit at FSU when he’s established a strong relationship but local OL Roderick Kearney flipped from the Seminoles to the Gators this week and it had some wondering — will FSU start to lose more commitments? The Seminoles were the hot team after a 4-0 start but 3 straight losses has them reeling a bit. Big things were expected in the 2023 class for Florida State and its honestly been rather average aside from the commitment of WR Hykeem Williams and a couple others. But I don’t think this is a sign of the class falling apart. A few more losses though and worry can ensue.

Offensive lineman Roderick Kearney from Orange Park High School is a 2022 Super 11 pick, shown in portrait, Tuesday, July 12, 2022 in Jacksonville.
