Matt Perkins highlights some of the best (and worse) performances from a busy week 4 of the college football season

Freshman Sensation: Jadyn Ott, Cal

The four-star true freshman had already shown promise, topping the century mark in the team’s opener against FCS UC-Davis, but he broke out in a huge way against Arizona over the weekend. He ran 19 times for 274 yards and three touchdowns, including a 73-yarder and this bullying 18-yarder.

Big Play Threat: DJ England-Chisolm, MTSU

The junior receiver had only two catches on the day but they were both spectacular. He started with a 71 yarder in the first quarter and finished with a 98-yarder in the fourth quarter to give the Blue Raiders what would be the winning score in their upset over the Hurricanes. 

Tackling Machine: Tommy Eichenberg, Ohio State

Eichenberg was everywhere for the Buckeyes on Saturday night, racking up 14 tackles and two tackles for loss in Ohio State’s evisceration of Wisconsin. He routinely stuffed Braelon Allen for gains of one or two, and was credited with 7 defensive stops (tackles that constitute a “failure” for the offense) per PFF.

Smack That: Dave Aranda

Full disclosure – I have a huge soft spot for the Baylor coach. I think he’s a generational defensive mind and would want him running my program in a heartbeat. But this had me (and apparently the rest of the college football world) dying on Saturday night.

Dual-Threat, pt. 1: Jalon Daniels, Kansas

In what ended up being not only one of the most anticipated matchups of the weekend, but also one of the best games, Kansas QB Jalon Daniels had the best performance of his career. He was an incredible 19 for 23 for 324 yards and four scores through the air while adding a game-high 83 yards and a score on the ground on just 11 carries. He did it all for a Jayhawks team that should be ranked.

Dual-Threat, pt. 2: Malik Cunningham, Louisville

The Cardinals are a Jekyll and Hyde team, but this weekend against a hapless USF team, they came out and dominated. Malik Cunningham had four total touchdowns and 300 yards of total offense. 

Lowest of the Low: Colorado State

The Rams lost to FCS Sacramento State. At home. By a score of 41-10. We knew that the situation in Fort Collins wasn’t good, as evidenced by the mass exodus of players via the portal this offseason, but no one could have imagined it would be this bad. Sacramento State’s 31-point margin of victory is the highest for an FCS school over an FBS program since Portland State’s 66-7 win over North Texas in 2015. The Aggies definitely took the win in stride.
