Recruiting Fact or Fiction: Nebraska, Ohio State, Desmond Ricks

In Mike Farrell’s Fact or Fiction, he determines of Mickey Joseph’s recruiting will land him the permanent job…

In today’s Fact or Fiction— Recruiting Edition — I look at three big recent topics on the recruiting trail and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Nebraska recruiting is just fine under Mickey Joseph.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

I hate to be a downer here but Malachi Coleman was always going to Nebraska and the latest get, RB Arnold Barnes, is a reach from Joseph’s old Louisiana stomping grounds. This is what Joseph needs to do as the interim coach, sell that he can recruit, but I just don’t see these as a big deal as others do.

Lincoln East’s Malachi Coleman catches a touchdown pass during a Sept. 23, 2021, game against Lincoln Southeast at Seacrest Field.

2. Ohio State recruits the Southeast as well as anyone.

Farrell’s take: FACT

DT Kayden McDonald is the latest example of this. Half of the Buckeyes top 10 players in this class play their football North Carolina or south and McDonald gives them double digit elite players from the Southeast. Obviously some SEC schools have more but you could argue it’s even more impressive based on geography. Ryan Day has taken over from Urban Meyer and is making noise in the South as his predecessor did.

3. Desmond Ricks is a lock for either Alabama or LSU.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

This might sound dumb but I like Florida as a major threat for the re-classified 2023 star CB as well. Why? They lost out on Cormani McClain in such stunning fashion I think they will go all in on Ricks from an NIL standpoint and beyond. And Corey Raymond needs a huge recruiting win here and he’s hard to bet against at times. Ricks will visit the Gators either Dec. 3 or Dec. 10 and he visits LSU officially Dec. 17. He will be at Alabama for an official for the Iron Bowl as well and will watch Alabama at LSU this weekend. LSU is thought to be the leader followed by Alabama but don’t sleep on the Gators.
